Anglican Church’s asylum ‘sanctuary’ bid
The Anglican Dean of Brisbane, Peter Catt, has proclaimed Queensland’s most prestigious cathedral a “sanctuary” for about 270 men, women and children facing deportation to Nauru, after the High Court, yesterday entrenched the legal basis for offshore processing.
The 115-year-old St John’s Cathedral — an emblem of the Queensland establishment — has today become one of at least ten churches across Australia to begin shielding asylum-seekers by invoking the ancient Christian tradition.
